This video invites you to be part of a training session in our Shuang Yang (Sun Frost) White Crane art with Master Iain and Emil on a very misty and slightly chilly morning at Doi Kiew Lon viewpoint on a mountain top near to Pai. Altitude about 1000m (3,280 feet).

Shuang Yang appears similar to Tai Chi with its soft, flowing movements but is actually completely different and comes from the Buddhist Shaolin branch of Chinese Martial Arts, not the Taoist Wu Dang branch.

A few tips from Master Iain.

Move naturally and fluidly. Take your time with these techniques. Practice slowly and with intention. The key to mastering Kung Fu lies in consistent and mindful practice.

The Golden Scissors
Stretch right forward. Keep your shoulders down.

Pan Gu Opening Heaven.
Take a step and stretch right up and around, making a big circle then folding over. This move is called "Pan Gu Opening Heaven." It's a beautiful move that opens your body and mind.

The Hungry Tiger Carrying a Lamb
Next, we transition into "The Hungry Tiger Carrying a Lamb." Straighten your back and feel the power as you lift and carry. With a straight back, you can pivot freely around the waist, preparing for the next set of movements.

The Old Tree Entwining Its Roots
From here, move into "The Old Tree Entwining Its Roots," Feel grounded and strong, like an ancient tree with deep roots.

The Golden Cockerel Standing on One Leg
Now, shift into "The Golden Cockerel Standing on One Leg." Transition smoothly up into a crane stance. Sink your centre of gravity to improve balance and stability. Drop your right hand to your side, letting it hang naturally.

Two Legs Taking a Leap.
Then jump: take a leap into the bow and arrow stance.

The Immortal Casting His Net.
Allow your arms to move naturally. To prepare bring them down and turn to the side then make a sweeping, blocking movement. The left hand aligns with the right elbow, creating a basic upper block. Rotate your arm around the elbow while turning your waist for driving force. The left hand should stay close to, but not touching, the right elbow.

I am going to repeat that last bit with you then. So from here, the golden scissors grip your hands take a step, stretch, stretch right up and around. You make a big circle fold over. This is called 'Pan Gu Opening Heaven', now the lifting movement, the 'Hungry Tiger Carrying a Lamb'. We straighten up, straighten the back. Now that we have a straight back, we can pivot freely around the waist. The 'Old Tree Entwining its Roots', up into a crane stance. The 'Golden Cockerel Standing On One Leg'. Drop your right hand down to your side, just let it hang down. That's great. Then a bit jump two legs, taking a leap. Just come down into the bow and arrow stance.

Jump, you have the arm from there to,

Well, you can just let the arms move quite naturally because actually what we're going to do next is bring them down and turn to the side there. And then we turn back making this sweeping, blocking movement the left by the right elbow. So this is your kind of basic upper block type movement. The arm is rotating around the elbow, but you're turning the waist at the same time to give it driving force. And the left is just next to the right elbow. Just there. Not quite touching.

Yeah.

Okay, let's do it again. Maybe we'll start from here. And this is the 'Golden Cockerel Standing On One Leg', two legs, taking a leap and then sweeping around here. Yeah. Fingertips an inch above the eyebrows. That's good. Try one more time. Left foot for that. Yeah. Right foot. Yeah. Grip. Okay. Now hold on. Step forward now with your left yeah. That's right. And step, step. And then more. Yeah. And then twist. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Okay. Pretty good. Okay. Yeah, work on that for a little bit. Just take it easy and take your time and practice it.
